THE NORTH-WEST AMATEUR BASKETBALL LEAGUE (NWABL)
The North-West Amateur Basketball League was established in 2005. The new sports association was initiated by the Rossiya Physical Education and Sports Trade Union Society of St. Petersburg and Leningrad Region chaired by Mr. Leonid Shiyanov, Nevsky Amateur Sports Development Fund presided by Mr. Aleksandr Sazonenko, the Student Basketball League of St. Petersburg and North-West chaired by Mr. Nikolay Sokolov. The League is supervised by Mrs. Tatiana Karamysheva, the Plenipotentiary Representative of the Russian Basketball Federation in the North-West Federal District.
The past seasons saw four men’s and five women’s championships of the North-West Federal District participated by the teams from Arkhangelsk, Vologda, Leningrad, Murmansk, Novgorod and Pskov Regions, the Republic of Karelia and St. Petersburg.
Since 2009 the NWABL has gone global. The League has established international contacts with FIMBA involved in arrangement of international veteran competitions; with CSIT holding World Sports Games; with the Lithuanian Sports Society "Žalgiris"; with the EFCS holding the European Company Sport Games. The League combined teams and particular teams often leave for Finland to take part in friendly matches with amateur and professional teams of this country.
A kind of the NWABL flagship is women’s teams. In the summer of 2010, Tallinnhosted the II CSIT World Sports Games. The Russian team Spartak, represented by NWABL club players, became the world champion among workers. In the summer of 2017, Riga hosted the V CSIT World Sports Games. The Russian team «TECHNOLINK-ATOM», represented by NWABL club players, became the world champion among workers again. At the beginning of July 2019 our team won silver medals at the VII CSIT games in Tortosa (Spain).
Our basketball players have also attained good results at the World Veteran Championships and European Veteran Championships held by FIMBA. During these competitions, Russia was represented in the 35+ age category by mostly NWABL club players. At the European Veteran Championships, the Russian national basketball team was awarded silver medals twice, i.e. in July 2010 in Zagreb (Croatia), in August 2012 in Kaunas (Lithuania), in July 2016 in Novi Sad (Serbia). In July 2018 Russian national team (F35+) ranked first in the European Championship in Maribor (Slovenia). In July 2013, at the World Basketball Championship in Thessaloniki (Greece) and in July 2017, at the World Basketball Championship in Montecatini Terme (Italy) Russian women’s team won bronze medals.
In June 2014, Russian women's team won gold medals at the European Promo Championship in Liepāja (Latvia).
The NWABL women’s teams successfully compete at the annual final summer spartakiads held by the Lithuanian Sports Society "Žalgiris". In 2010, Vodnik women’s team won silver medals in Šiauliai. In 2011, the NWABL combined team based on Technolink came back from Vilnius with gold medals. In the summer of 2013 and 2014, Technolink won the second prize in Palanga. In 2018, the NWABL combined team based on Technolink came back from Marijampole with gold awards.
Since 2011, the NWABL and the Rossiya Physical Education and Sports Trade Union Society have held a sports project completely new for St. Petersburg, i.e. the CORPORATE LEAGUE of Men’s Amateur Teams. A team of a company, organisation or firm can only be made up of the players employed directly with these entities.
The North-West Amateur Basketball League is always ready to help sports teams of companies, organizations and firms of the North-West Region of Russia. The NWABL is open for mutually advantageous cooperation in promotional activities and invites sports teams to take part in competitions.
